LOOK AT WHAT YOU LOVE

What do you like to do? What would you be doing if money wasn’t an issue? Finding your passion is easier than it sounds. All you have to do is figure out what you love doing, and then find a way to make money off of it. Simple as that! So stop stressing out about finding your passion—you already have one. The trick is learning how to capitalize on it.

NOTICE WHERE YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME

When you start paying attention to how you spend your free time, it's easier to notice what gives you a spark of joy. Maybe it's spending time with friends, or helping others, or playing music. Maybe it's writing emails in your pajamas while eating pizza. Whatever sparks your passion should be used as a starting point for where to focus your energy when trying to figure out what do I want? and what am I good at? It may not be easy, but once you make that connection between something that gives you joy and some way to turn that joy into income, things get a lot easier.

Narrow Down A Niche

Before you can find your passion, you need to figure out what you want. This part might sound clichéd, but it’s absolutely true: if you don’t know what it is that will truly make you happy, how do you expect to find it? If your ultimate goal is happiness in whatever form it takes, then all of these other steps won’t matter if you have nothing concrete to work toward.

Try New Things

Finding your passion isn’t as easy as you think. It’s not a matter of just trying one thing and figuring out if it’s your passion or not. Instead, find something you like to do – say, jogging or reading – and then try new things that fall under that category. Maybe jog through a different neighborhood or read a new author. With each attempt, you might discover something you love even more than what you were doing before!

Focus On Something You’re Good At

One of my favorite pieces of advice for people who aren’t sure what their passion is: pick something you are already good at and do more of it. This isn’t a very sexy answer, but as James Clear explains in his great piece on how to find your passion, maybe you don’t know exactly what it is that drives you. I understand. But I bet there are already things in your life that you spend time doing that bring up feelings of excitement, satisfaction, or passion.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

When it comes to finding your passion, you’ve got to get out of your comfort zone and try things that interest you. You may already have a list of things you’re interested in, but it might be helpful to try new hobbies and activities outside of those interests. The best way to start is by learning what you don’t like. Get out there and volunteer or take a class or do anything that allows you to explore new interests, whether or not they seem immediately relevant to your career. In addition, remember that having fun is part of finding your passion — find work that excites you! Even if it doesn’t seem like work because it's something fun for you -every minute can be used as an opportunity for learning about yourself.

Doing What You Love Doesn’t Have to Mean Getting Paid to Do It

Finding your passion means not settling for anything less than what lights you up. Whether it’s figuring out a way to make your passion your job or finding another opportunity to do something you love, don’t wait until retirement to start doing what you love—start now!
